The Strava App beyond "Segments"

Robert Gaggini

The Strava app is one of many analytical cycling applications available.

However is Strava the most popular?

Strava is the facebook of cycling!

It is the "Segments" that make Strava standout.

With "Segments" you can compare to the rest of the world, compare to your friends and compete against yourself.

I have had Strava Premium for a number of years and therefore my comments are based on this.

What else does Strava offer beyond "Segments"?

Define The Basics

Distance, Time, Elevation Gain and Calories are provided. On different screens, average and maximum values of HR, W, and Speed are provided.

The Map

Where you did your session. GPS is amazing when you stop to think about it.

Riding Partners

In case you didn't already know. ( It can provide data on your opponents ).

Approximate Power

If you do not have the real thing, (ie power meter), this feature works quite well.

Data Analysis
Data Analysis

Power and Heart Rate Zone Analysis

Cumulative time spent in power zones per ride/session provides meaningful insight regarding the quality of the session.

Unfortunately, Strava does not provide a weekly analysis of these zones.

Heart Rate Data
Heart Rate Data

Elevation, Speed and Heart Rate Curves.

This provides overall trend analysis.

For detailed analysis these curves have to examined in context.

Unfortunately they are quite small and are separated unlike the web version. Therefore it is not possible to have simultaneous analysis.

However, as a portable documentation (it's on your phone) they are handy!

Segment Analysis

With this you can see fine detail. You have up to 4 variables being displayed at any given time.

You can evaluate areas that can be improved.

You can see real time gradients!

A useful feature.

Thank You for Reading. Please Share.
